Why is wellness so important in the workplace?
For the last 20 months, mainly due to the pandemic, leadership focus has switched to prioritising their staff wellness.
This change has been incredible, staff have seen their employers offer many new solutions to try to support their wellness. We have heard of zoom free Fridays, more flexibility around home working and just generally more awareness of the impact that life events have on employee working lives.
We hope that this is just the start, as we believe that many of the current wellness programmes and strategies that businesses offer, whilst fantastic, could still go further. Imagine if wellness was the lens that you viewed everything at your business through, it’s clear that with this approach the performance of existing staff would increase and it would help attract new talent too.
After 8 years working for Nike our founder Bex, knows first-hand the lengths that athlete’s will go to every day to ensure that they put themselves in the perfect place to perform on game day.
These preparations extend way beyond their mental health, nutrition, and movement. They think about who they interact with, what social media they consume and are also very intentional about their wellness. Most athletes would also hire experts outside of their club team too, to ensure that they are capitalising on every opportunity to find marginal gains, which matter when you are a high performer.
Within the club, the team onsite would ensure that everything is executed to the highest standard too. As an example, the groundsman would ensure that the playing surface is the best that it can be to support the player performance and of course that they have the best physios, trainers, and on-site facilities to support their amazing athletes.
Let’s consider for one moment what impact a bad training facility might have on someone like Cristiano Ronaldo? If he was asked to play football on a bumpy pitch, there is no doubt that he could still perform but we would probably not see the skills or the high performance that we see week on week at Old Trafford.
If we use this Cristiano example and switch our view back to the workplace, what would you do differently?
Would you consider whether meeting rooms, if we are looking for fantastic ideas, should really be in the basement with no natural daylight?
Would you think about creating areas where employees can meet, collaborate, and share best practice?
There is no surprise that if you look back at the sporting world, all the successful sporting teams usually have facilities which match their trophy hauls.
